Last week the lab visited the conference of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology in Prague. PhD-students Kalle Nilsson and Zachary Nolen got to present their work during the poster session, and former MSc-student Emma Kärrnäs got a certificate of excellence for her poster. Former post doc, Homa Papoli Yazdi, had a talk where she presented her exciting work on autopolyploidy in the diversity of Lithophragma bolanderi, and Anna presented their joint paper on transgressive expression in hybrid Italian sparrows and outlined the recently funded research to further investigate this phenomenon.
We are most happy to welcome Alex Lawrence, a new PhD-student who will work on how hybridization derived changes to gene expression can arise. Alex has a BSc in Environmental Biology from Edinburgh Napier University and a MSc in Palaeobiology from the University of Bristol and performed his MSc on the phylogenetics of vertebrate retinal cell types using gene expression data.
We are most happy to welcome Isolde van Riemsdijk, an incoming post doc with a keen interest in conservation genomics. Isolde will work a FORMAS funded project on the importance of connectivity for maintaining genetic diversity in pollinator populations. Isolde has a MSc from Wageningen University (NL), a PhD from Leiden University/Naturalis Biodiversity Center (NL) and is finishing up a postdoc at Tübingen University (DE).
We are extremely pleased to have recruited Petronella Wessman as a lab assistant who will be instrumental for RNA-extractions, bird breeding experiments and tissue specific gene expression. Petronella has a MSc in Molecular Biology, and her work experience outside of academia has equipped her with important organizational skills that will be an asset for our diverse team.
